BLOOD, sweat and tears were all shed as a team of 23 cyclists pedalled over 100 miles in support of a toddler from Yate.

Shane Brennan organised the epic bike ride, from Birmingham to Bristol, cajoling 22 of his colleagues and clients at engineering company Briggs and Forrester to take part in the gruelling challenge in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Shane’s one-year-old daughter Annabelle has the life-limiting condition which causes mucus to gather in the lungs.

Briggs and Forrester, which has offices in Warmley as well as in Birmingham, selected the trust as its chosen charity for the year and had already raised £2,000 before business development manager Shane suggested the 104-mile ride which took place on Thursday (June 9).

“It is the hardest thing I have ever done,” said Shane, on the final stop at the Fleur de Flys in Pucklechurch. “I never want to get back on a bike again.

“I did a Tough Mudder last year but this was on a whole different level. I don’t really know how I made it, I wanted to stop with 20 miles to go and then we got to Chipping Sodbury and the kids were there and I couldn’t even look at them, I had lost it by then and definitely had some tears.”

Shane, who lives with wife Liz in of Wiltshire Avenue, was joined by sons Finley, 8, and Oscar, 4, for the last mile of the ride which has so far raised £5,000 for the trust.

“It has been quite emotional and really hard but also incredible,” added Shane. “My colleagues didn’t need to be slugging their guts out for 100 miles on a really hot day but they did and I want to say a really big thank you to them.

“It is a massive achievement and although they shouted at me for putting some big hills on the route, they all beat me.

“The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is our charity until October so we aim to raise £8,000 or £9,000 by then. That is phenomenal.”

Company director Chris Church said: “Obviously it is a great cause and it was a really enjoyable ride, a lovely route with good people.

“We all made it with no mechanical failures and only one person fell off.

“We are a family orientated company and are pleased to support this great cause.”

Shane and Liz continue to fundraise for the trust, in the hope it will find a cure to Cystic Fibrosis. Make a donation at justgiving.com/shaneandliz
