PEOPLE living in an area of Yate marked The Queen’s 90th birthday with a community picnic.

Around 80 residents of the Abbotswood area of south Yate came together for lunch on Sunday (June 12) to celebrate the occasion with an indoor picnic and children’s games.

Threatening clouds drove the picnic indoors into the St Nicholas Family Centre, but the friendly and fun event, organised by Abbotswood Action Group, was enjoyed by people of all ages. When the weather cleared the children enjoyed games outside in the centre’s community garden.

Paul Hulbert, vice-chairman of the action group, said: "The picnic really brought the community together. The team worked really hard and produced a great event.

"We've got lots more in store for the rest of the year, including the Abbotswood Autumn apple day in October, and a litter-based art project in a local school after the summer holidays."

Meanwhile, in Wickwar, the village social club opened its doors to all on Saturday (June 11).

Members of the Wickwar World Challenge group, which raises money to send students on expeditions around the globe, supplied afternoon tea as part of their fundraising for their trip with Katharine lady Berkeley School.

Ladies from Wickwar Church and the sub-committee from Wickwar Social Club served the packed club while adults and children alike enjoyed a Punch and Judy show.
There was also a good old fashioned sing-a-long with music supplied by Tony Minchella.

Organiser Honie Wintle said: “We had some gorgeous princesses and one handsome prince.

“We hope all that attended enjoyed the afternoon.”
