RIO Olympics stars Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish will be among more than 200 Lycra-clad cyclists zooming through Chipping Sodbury next week in the UK’s premier road race.

The elite field will be using its pedal power to speed down the High Street on Thursday, September 8.

The eight-day multi-stage race sees participants cycle the length of the UK.

It starts in George Square in Glasgow this Sunday and finishes in the heart of London on Sunday, September 11.

It is set to pass through Wotton-under-Edge and Uley before it reaches Chipping Sodbury between 2.30pm and 3.20pm.

Riders will wheel down Wickwar Road turning right into the High Street, onto Rounceval Street before they turn left at the roundabout into Culverhill Road, past Chipping Sodbury School.

A road closure will roll throughout the afternoon as cyclists’ complete Stage Five of the race.

Chairman of the Sodbury Chamber of Commerce Jo Cox told the Gazette: “We are very pleased to welcome them to travel through our town in this event and we look forward to lots of people coming to cheer them on,” she said.

Stage Five covers 3,292m of climbing, taking the Tour of Britain across South Wales and into Gloucestershire, finishing for the day in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath.

Rolling out from Aberdare, the race will head east through Pontypool and Usk before running through the Forest of Dean and up along the Severn Estuary into Gloucester.

The riders will head south into the Cotswolds before passing through Stroud and Dursley to Bath, the second time the modern race has visited the city, but the first time it has hosted a stage finish.

Town councillor Philip O’Rourke (North East Ward), who has been involved in co-ordinating the day, said it was a “great honour” to host the Tour of Britain.
