A YATE-based community transport company has celebrated the introduction of two new minibuses to their fleet with a competition for a nearby school to name one.

Green Community Travel, a not-for-profit organisation based on North Road, received the two new additions thanks to the Department of Transport’s community transport minibus fund back in July.

A competition was then organised by South Gloucestershire councillor Marian Lewis for children from North Road Primary School to name one of the buses, with suggestions coming in thick and fast.

After shortlisting the best entries, the eventual winning entry “Matilda”, an entry inspired by the Roald Dahl character, was put forward by eight-year-old Mia Rushent and nine-year-old Bryony Hinder.

They said that Matilda is magical and buses can be too – plus Matilda always perseveres.

The winners were each presented with a book token in an assembly by the school’s head teacher Sarah Stille and Jenny Bright, manager of Green Community Travel.

Visiting the school for its maiden voyage on Thursday, October 13, the children got the first glance of a newly-painted Matilda, proudly displaying its new name, ahead of going into service.
