UPGRADES planned for Bristol Parkways station are set to go on display in Stoke Gifford this Tuesday.

The works, which will prepare the Great Western Main Line for electrification, will also see the replacement of signalling equipment installed in the 1960s and 1970s, with the latest technology to offer a more efficient service.

Network Rail’s electrification conversion of the line will accommodate their new fleet of faster, greener electric trains, which they say will also offer more seats and more room for passengers.

The proposed work includes the stabilisation of the embankment next to the Filton Lane, the installation of foundations for the overhead line equipment powering the new trains, as well as the overhead line itself.

Repairs will be made to the Bristol Road Bridge, and 2.5km of railway line will be renewed.

A fourth platform is also set to be built at the station, with existing platforms being extended.

Bristol Parkway will stay open for the majority of the project, which is set to start late next month, with work taking place mainly overnight or at the weekends.

The drop in-exhibition will take place from 4.30pm to 7.30pm at St Michael’s Centre in Stoke Gifford with members of the Network Rail team on hand to answer questions from residents and railways users.

Ross Liddell, Network Rail’s sponsor for Bristol Parkway station, said: “The work at Bristol Parkway station is an essential part of our Railway Upgrade Plan and will pave the way for electric trains and the benefits these will bring to residents and passengers.

“These benefits include faster trains with more seats and more legroom, and less noise and air pollution for those who live close to the railway line.”

Network Rail’s project manager for Bristol Parkway, Ken Forshaw, said: “I’d like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential improvements to modernise Brunel’s railway.

“Everyone is welcome at our drop-in event and I’d urge anyone who has a question or wants to know more about our plans to come along.”
