TWO weeks today runners tackled a 9.7 mile race across Chipping Sodbury - embarking on a 343ft climb up Little Sodbury Hill Fort, and a descent into the event’s infamous pig trough.

The event saw 1103 participants complete the Easy Runner Sodbury Slog on Sunday, 26, last month.

Race Director Steve Herring said: “The Slog is organised by runners for runners. It attracts mud-loving runners of all abilities from across the country.”

Annabel Granger of the Bristol and West Athletics Club was the first lady home in an impressive time of one hour and eight minutes, just one minute slower than her time last year.

The men’s race was won by David Green of the University of Bristol Athletics and Cross Country Club (UBACCC) in a staggering time of one hour and 15 seconds.

Steve said: “The running by the UBACCC was top class. They took seven of the ten places in the senior men’s competition, and five of the top ten places in the senior ladies competition.”

The UBACCC’s Club Captain said: Katie Royals said: “Overall the club had a great race there, with about 30 of our squad - both current members and alumni competing.

“All of the top three men were from UBACCC, David Green, Andy Salmon and Kit Grierson, as well as the 2nd and 4th girls, Phillipa Williams and Rosie Street.

“The slog is always a prominent feature in our racing calendar. We like to run in fancy dress and that combined with the challenge of a 10mile race through mud seems to be what appeals year on year.”

At the start of the race - using £2 from each participant’s entry fee - the race director Steve Herring presented a cheque to Ian Lowe, President of Chipping Sodbury’s Rotary Club, and a donation to Horton Village Hall for their help with event marshalling.

It was held on Remembrance Sunday, and was preceded by the playing of the Last Post the reading of the Exhortation and 2 minutes silence.
