STAFF at Winterbourne International Academy (WIA) launched a Save our School Campaign this week as they invited parents and pupils to a public meeting to discuss the school’s new leadership options.

Perhaps the strongest message at the meeting was the desire to see the academy run by an organisation based locally – with some parents saying they’d prefer South Gloucestershire Council to once again take over the school.

This is unlikely to happen under the current Conservative government, which is very much pro academy, but the Gazette wholeheartedly supports the campaign to ensure that whichever organisation takes over Winterbourne – and possibly Yate International Academy too – is based locally.

They require leaders who understand the needs of the local area and who are accountable – not bosses based in London or somewhere else miles away who don’t know anything about our community.
