A SENIOR citizens club from Yate launched the Christmas season in style with a grand party in Chipping Sodbury today.

More than 50 members and guests of the Shireway Over-50s club met in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall for a three-course-meal, with members present ranging from 68 to 98-years-old.

The group meets every Monday at the Shireway Community Centre.

As the last group of its kind in Yate that meets weekly, the club’s members are keen to keep active and with plenty of music, food and good company they were able to enjoy the festive season.

“It is brilliant to see so many people here today,” said the party’s organiser Peter Gibbs.

“Usually we would go for a meal and then head home but its Christmas so we had to have a party!

“Our membership may have gone down in recent years but we want everyone to know that we are still going and anyone is welcome to join.”

He added: “The people from the Town Hall and the caterers have been amazing and I think everyone has had a fantastic time.”

Following the meal, special guests Yate mayor Cllr Tony Davis and Cllr Sue Walker made a surprise presentation to the club’s chairman Valerie Glenny and treasurer Eunice Bennett, who were each given a beautiful bouquet of flowers in appreciation of their long-running, excellent service to the group.

A further presentation was made to club member Jackie Boucher, who was unfortunately unable to attend the party.

“It is humbling and warming to see everyone enjoying themselves here today,” said Cllr Davis.

“With all the strains on volunteers for elderly activities these days, it is fantastic that people are putting in so much time to help their fellow man.”
