A NEW Scout group has been formed for children in Wickwar.

The Scout Association organised an enrolment celebration for the new group at the parish church.

Around 150 people attended, as well as Thornbury and Yate’s MP Luke Hall, and lots of guests and parents.

Tony Edmonds, the association’s regional development intern, said: “This is the first complete new group in this area for many years.

“Children here were denied the chance to join Scouting whilst others had to travel to Scout groups in Cromhall or Wotton.”

A total of 44 young people have already joined the group for boys and girls aged six to 14.

The Pears Family Charitable Foundation helped fund the new group.

Donna Tew, the Scouts Association’s regional development manager, said: “The reason that this project has been so successful is the approach that Pears have as a funder – the importance placed on learning and being able to try new things.”

Mr Edmonds added: “Scouts can help children to get a head start in life.”

It can take them away from everyday stresses.

“Lots of adventure activities are arranged, and they particularly enjoy residential trips, especially to Woodhouse Park where they get to take part in cooking, climbing and archery.”
