WOMEN from South Gloucestershire joined a campaign march in Bristol against the presidency of Donald Trump.

They came to Bristol’s Sister March to show their support for the Women’s March in the United States’ capital of Washington today.

The women came together to protect their right to equality and diversity – which they feel will be undermined by the American president.

An attendee from Easter Compton, who went with her friend, explained that it was only a short walk from Queen Square to College Green, so they trailed the route three times to strengthen their objection.

Begoña Charlton, 55, said: “We went to the Women’s March to send a message to Trump that we cannot go back to the 50’s, to make a point that women have to be treated equally and despite what he says women will keep fighting to change this world.

She added: “After Michele Obama was in the White House who was such an incredible role model, intelligent, articulate and involved with so many worthy causes – this is a step backwards.”

More than 500 people signed-up to the march in Bristol which took place alongside 616 other sister marches in cities including London, Sydney, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Mrs Charlton added: “It was arranged at short notice so many of those who came had already made plans to go to the event in London. It was a great opportunity for those who couldn’t go to our capital to remain part of one of the protests.”

Organisers of the Bristol Women’s March said: "We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families - our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our planet."

They believe that the 4-year presidency of Donald Trump is a threat to their rights.

As he became the 45th president of the United States at an Inaugural Address in Washington, he said: "We the citizens of America are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and restore its promise for all of our people.

"Together we will determine the course of America and the world for many, many years to come.

"We will face challenges, we will confront hardships, but we will get the job done."
