REGISTRATION has opened for a cancer charity’s relay and camping event in Yate.

Cancer Research UK have opened their registration for the Relay for Life event taking place on Saturday, July 1, and Sunday, July 2.

During the fundraiser teams, of up to 16 people, must always have at least one member relaying around a track for the entire course of a day. They camp inside the track at Yate’s Outdoor Sport Complex – and enjoy live music as well as themed dressing-up laps.

Yate’s Relay for Life chairwoman Beverley Sadier said: “It is a 24-hour walking, running or wheel-chairing event open to all ages, abilities, backgrounds and sexes. Cancer never sleeps and so for the duration neither does the fundraising.”

The event last year raised £56,000 due to the hard work of their teams of fundraisers.

“Everyone was so committed to supporting and funding the ground-breaking work of Cancer Research UK’s brilliant scientists, doctors and nurses who strive to prevent cancer and also increase survival rates of cancer sufferers.

“This year it is free to everyone who would like to participate, and registration is up-and-running already with nearly 20 teams registered in the first week of opening.

“A growing number of people are registering as a Guest of Honour (survivor). This is anyone who has ever heard the words “You have cancer.”

The Guests of Honour are invited to take part as a VIP, to lead the festivities, and take part in a Survivors lap and complimentary lunch provided by the host Yate Athletics Club.

The event also includes activities and games for racers and their family or guests.

Co-chairman Liam Craddock said: “As it grows so does our gratitude to the amazing local businesses who support us with free services, and amazing raffle prizes.

“We have great links with Eesh Bristol and our resident DJ Dom Walker who gives up the whole weekend to provide great music and entertainment. Thanks to Indesit Yate, Sprint Print, Brandon Hire, Rich McD and Vintage Birdcage Cakery and Café, and many others, who help us keep our costs to a minimum.”
