A PUPIL at Hambrook Primary School has been awarded the position of May Queen at this year's Winterbourne Down Village Carnival.

The coveted role has been handed to 9-year-old Hannah Daniels, who will be crowned May Queen at the town's annual two day festival.

Her attendants have been named as Amelia Hookings, 8, and Elizabeth Cobbett, 7, who also attend Hambrook Primary.

The three girls will ride together in an open top sports car at a parade through Winterbourne on Monday, May 1 and will also help out with a raffle.

The annual carnival runs for two days over the May bank holiday weekend, and starts on Sunday, April 29.

Fred Smith, who has chaired the Carnival Committee for 26 years, is inviting everyone in the area to attend.

He said: "Everyone should come along, it's always great fun.

"Last year it rained and we got soaked but it was still a good day."

He added: "People should be aware that the main road will be closed during the carnival."

There will be a wide variety of events over the course of the two days.

On Sunday at 2pm, a family treasure hunt and scarecrow trail will kick off the festivities. This will be followed by a Scarecrow competition and entertainment from Westerly Showband and The North Avon Singers.

Events on the Monday kick off at 10am with a Marvel character themed fancy dress parade through the village. The parade will be led by Pipers from the City of Bristol Pipe Band and will start at Bradley Avenue.

Following this, fancy dress costumes will be judged by chairman Fred Smith and Hannah Daniels will be crowned as the official Carnival Queen.

In the afternoon, a variety of entertainment will be on display from dancing groups and musicians. A small animal demonstration will be held in the Methodist Church Top Hall from 1.15pm, and a tug of war contest will take place at 3pm.

Proceeds from the carnival will be donated towards charity BRACE, who support alzheimer's and dementia research.
