TWO World War II veterans from Marshfield have received medals from the French Government in recognition of their services during the war.

Sgt Tom Hall, 94, and Corporal Bill Billett, 96, have each been issued with a Legion D’Honneur, a war medal that recognises British personnel who served in the liberation of France, and particularly Normandy.

Thornbury and Yate candidate Luke Hall, visited the pair on Tuesday morning to celebrate with both veterans.

He first met with the local war heroes after it came to light that they were still waiting for their medals.

After speaking with Mark Lancaster, Minister for Defence Veterans, Reserves and Personnel, Mr Hall succeeded in obtaining the veterans’ medals, and took the opportunity to catch up with them on Tuesday.

“Sgt Hall and Corporal Billett are our country's finest,” Mr Hall said.

“I am delighted that both gentlemen have now received their Legion D’Honneur and would like to take this opportunity to thank both men for their incredible service.”

Mr Hall added: “It is vital that we recognise the great bravery of our Armed Forces, both past and present, and do everything we can to ensure they have receive the recognition they truly deserve.”
