TWO teenagers from Yate fought their way to the top at the Welsh Open Karate Championships last month.

Alfie Fuller (1st Dan) and Cara Tippins (1st kyu), who are both 14, won gold medals in their age category after they performed a martial arts routine for judges on Sunday, June 25.

The competition had over 600 entries from England, Ireland and Wales and saw a range of events including free-style sparring (called kumite) and Karate routines (called Kata).

Both Alfie and Cara entered the Wado Ryu Kata in the 13-15yrs (boys/girls) category, where they were assessed by five judges for their power, precision, speed and understanding.

The duo were both scored highly in two different rounds, and walked away with two gold medals in their respective categories.

Blackbelt Alfie, who attends Brimsham Green School, said: “Training for the Welsh open championship look a lot of hard work and dedication and I was determined to win.

“Competing has given me more confidence to succeed in further competitions and better myself.”

Cara, who is just one belt away from becoming a black belt, also took part in a 13-14yrs 50kg sparring event, but was beaten by a half point in the quarter final.

But the future is looking bright for the karate champion, who goes to school at Yate International Academy.

She said:  “My Sensei (instructor) recently rewarded me a squad badge and gave me a very encouraging talk telling me how I was working in the right direction.

“My short term goal would be to win at our own competition in November. It’s usually a really high standard so I would love to win there.

“Long term I would love to represent England and get in to the Olympics.”

Both teenagers train twice a week at Winterbourne Community Centre under the guidance of their instructor, Sensei Wesley Streete.
