AFTER her boyfriend was killed in a car crash on Bristol Road in Frampton Cotterell, 24-year-old Katie Lee has started a campaign to make the road safer.

Martin Williams, 23, was in the backseat of a Mitsubishi when the driver lost control and crashed on the B4058 on Saturday, April 8.

Although his two companions survived, Martin passed away from his injuries.

His partner Katie is now calling for speed cameras to be installed on the road to help prevent another tragedy.

She is in the process of launching an online petition and is urging the community of Frampton Cotterell to back her campaign.

“Martin’s death could have been so easily avoided,” Katie said. “I am no longer angry at the driver, but I am angry that nothing has been done about this road before.

“After speaking to many people in the surrounding community, and after living in Winterbourne for 19 years, I have not only heard about, but witnessed the reckless driving along the B4058.

“My Martin was one of the unlucky ones, and I am determined to make sure that his death is not needless.”

Martin, an aeronautical engineer who lived in Eastington near Stroud, was just two weeks away from his 24th birthday at the time of the accident and had been saving up to buy a house.

Popular with all who knew him, he enjoyed going to the gym and had a passion for cars, often spending his free time tinkering with his own car.

Katie, who lives in Eastington, said: “Everyone that met him loved him – he didn’t have a bad bone in his body.

“His loss has left everyone who knew him devastated, and I would not wish it on anyone else.

“It is a feeling I never thought I would have to feel, so I have taken it upon myself to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

Cllr Steven Clark, of Frampton Cotterell Parish Council, told the Gazette he will raise the issue of the safety of Bristol Road with fellow members of the council.

Katie’s petition will be available to find online in the next few days – see the Gazette website for details.
