THORNBURY and Yate MP Luke Hall has secured a ‘day of action’ to enforce Yate’s Station Road heavy goods vehicle weight limit.
Avon and Somerset Police, alongside South Gloucestershire Council, are set to take action on companies whose heavy goods vehicles ignore the road’s 7.5T weight limit in the near future, after Mr Hall raised residents’ concerns with the authority and police force.
Residents met with the MP to share their concerns over what they felt were frequent incidents of goods vehicles, weighing more than the official tonnage limit, trundling through one of Yate’s main thoroughfares.
Whilst companies who have HGVs destined for the surrounding depots and bases can legitimately use parts of Station Road, it is feared some companies and its drivers are flouting the limit – driving through the town centre to access the north south artery of the A46, to the east of Yate.
It is hoped that, in enforcing the limit, the day of joint action will stop the problem worsening, as residents claim the heavy traffic can prove dangerous to pedestrians and car users.
After hearing the concerns, the MP got in touch with the council’s communities department and the police, who agreed to co-ordinate their approach.
The MP said: “I am extremely grateful to the council’s street care team, and to the police for their quick and positive response to Station Road residents’ concerns.
“I am hoping that the day of action will act to remind those companies flouting the limit it is enforced.”
A date for the action day has yet to be set.
