SIX intrepid members of Chipping Sodbury and Yate Rotary Clubs abseiled over 100 feet down the side of Southmead Hospital’s Brunel Building, raising almost £3000 in aid of charity.
The team, with an average age of 67, took on the challenge to raise funds for the hospital’s £2 million Prostate Cancer Care Appeal. Money raised will enable the hospital to purchase two new surgical robots to meet the growing demand for prostate surgery.
One of those taking part was the new president of Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, John Berridge.
”Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and robotic surgery is more accurate, less invasive and reduces the length of stay in hospital” he said.
“We decided that this is a really worthwhile project to support because this cutting edge treatment will improve facilities for generations to come”
Other Rotarians taking part were John Wells, Ian Joseph, Kevan Allington and Keith Pattison from Chipping Sodbury and Geoff Nener from the Yate club.
Lead Urology Consultant at North Bristol NHS Trust, Anthony Koupparis said: “Our team at Southmead are regional, national and European leaders for robotic surgery and the appeal will ensure we stay at the forefront of this technology.”
