A GROUP of community-minded conservationists are calling for volunteers to help spruce up Yate and Chipping Sodbury’s green spaces.

The Friends of Ridge Wood are a small but enthusiastic group, who help to maintain and enhance the Ridge Wood nature reserve, which is located between Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

Each year, throughout the autumn and winter, the Friends hold monthly work mornings, where they undertake tasks such as clearing scrub, coppicing, litter picking and tree planting.

They also carry out an annual survey of bluebells in the woodland, removing non-native varieties to allow the British bluebells to thrive.

“The aim is to promote biodiversity in the woodland and keep it looking good,” said Emma Morrison, of the Friends.

“Last year, we were fortunate to receive a grant from South Gloucestershire Council allowing the purchase of new tools for use on workdays.

“This has meant that more people can get involved, and several new volunteers have recently joined the crew. However, there is plenty of work to do and new faces are always welcome.

“Woodlands are under threat in the UK, but hopefully with the work of groups like the Friends, this one will be a valuable local treasure for years to come.” Details via: ridge-wood.org.uk
