A CHIPPING Sodbury hairdresser who learned the trade as a teenager is celebrating the 40th anniversary of opening her business in the town this month.

Janet Edwards, 78, started her hairdressing career in 1954 at Joyce’s in Horse Street.

She was 15 years old at the time and, after serving a five year apprenticeship, stayed on there for a further 12 years.

She went on to work in Yate and Old Sodbury before opening her own salon at 1 The Parade in November 1977.

Janet has employed many local people over the years. Staff turnover at at the salon has been very low and the team today includes Jacky and Sharon, who have worked there for 30 years, Jane, who joined 13 years ago, and Megan, who started working there in 2016.

Janet retired in 2012 to spend more time with her husband, Don. He had been very patient when she worked long hours at the business and always had a meal ready waiting for her when she came home.

Sadly he died seven months after she retired.

Janet’s niece Rebecca went into partnership with Janet in 1999, and now looks after all the business affairs and administration.

Janet still visits the salon twice a week and enjoys catching up with clients whilst having her hair done.

As part of the 40th celebrations, customers can win a complimentary wash, cut, blow dry and finish.

Throughout the month of December customers will be given a raffle ticket for a draw. The prize will be redeemable in January.
