THE taste of West Africa is coming to Rangeworthy next month, at a special fundraising event.

The Yate – Genieri Link charity is hosting a Gambian dinner, where various West African foods will be served.

There will be musical entertainment too.

Cash raised by the evening, set to take place at Rangeworthy village hall on February 3, will be used to help support a pre-school day care centre in Genieri, in the Gambia.

The town of Yate has been linked with the village of Genieri in the Gambia for over 30 years.

Link committee members visited Genieri last year to monitor the progress of various projects they have been supporting there.

One of the projects has seen an area of 100m by 100m turned into vegetable gardens.

These are managed by the women of the village, under the supervision of Sulayman Sanneh, a young man chosen by the community to go to college and gain an agricultural certificate, sponsored by Yate – Genieri Link.

The Link also funded chain link fencing to protect the crops from baboons.

The gardens are now flourishing and the villagers’ diet is much improved. There is already a small surplus to sell.

Tickets for the Yate-Genieri Link Gambian dinner are available at £10 from Marian Lewis on 01454 313033.
