West Women’s Hockey League Berkeley Division One: Wotton-under-Edge 2 Redland UWE 0

GOALS from Jasmin George and Sharron Bates as well as a penalty stroke save from Beth Priday helped Wotton to another three points, this time against Redland.
Wotton adapted quickly to the water-based surface and while the teams looked evenly matched at the start the hosts began to dominate with their constructive play and dogged determination when dispossessed. The first goal came after 25 minutes at the second penalty corner when player-of-the-match George completed the perfectly-executed three-pass routine.
Just before the break Bates came close at the fourth penalty corner, but was thwarted by the Redland keeper.
After a few minutes of the second half Wotton went through their most vulnerable period. A few defensive errors left them on the back foot and broke their concentration, and at one point Priday needed to fend away a strong shot.
But to Wotton’s credit they weathered the storm and reaffirmed their grip on the game when a dazzling run by Emma Chalmers along the sideline and behind the defence allowed her to set up Bates, who put the chance away without hesitation. Wotton continued to press and looked like stretching their lead until another defensive error in the closing minutes led to a penalty flick. Priday was centre stage again and easily dealt with what turned out to be a relatively benign stroke.
Anna Patteson, Heather Reid, Lottie Aldridge, Eilidh Rogers and Chalmers all showed that they would chase after every ball and the ability and spirit of this team has grown remarkably as the season has progressed.
Division Three: South Glos 4 Wotton-under-Edge 2nds 1 A SUPERB goal from Beccy Chalmers was one of the few high spots in a poor quality game where Wotton were outplayed. They will be looking to get back to winning ways against bottom of the table Wick this weekend.
