YATE TOWN boss Rob Cousins is still on the lookout for a new striker after missing out on two targets.

Weston-super-Mare’s Kayne McLaggon has signed on dual registration terms, but his availability will be dependant on the Conference South club’s requirements.

Mangotsfield United striker Marcus Duharty has turned down a move to Yate, while Cousins also had a loan bid for Jake Reid, who previously played for the club in the Southern League Premier, rejected by Conference Premier side AFC Telford.

That has left Cousins to go back to the drawing board as he tries to find a replacement for top scorer Tom Knighton, who joined Chippenham last month.

Former Bristol Rovers and Southampton ace McLaggon is looking to get match fitness after missing the start of the season through injury.

He was due to play in the Southern League Division One South and West clash against Cirencester Town on Tuesday night, but the game was postponed due to a frozen pitch, and Cousins hopes he will be able to face local rivals Clevedon Town on Saturday (3pm).

“He’s got something about him,” said Cousins.

“If we can help him out by giving him some games and he can help us out then it’s all well and good.”

McLaggon certainly has a lot of pedigree having come through the youth system that produced the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Southampton, making his debut in a 2-0 Championship defeat at Plymouth on Boxing Day 2008.

The 22-year-old went onto make four starts and nine substitute appearances for the club, the most notable of which saw him come off the bench in a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup at the St Mary’s Stadium in January 2009.

McLaggon scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw at Norwich City later that month and added three more to his tally before being released by then manager Alan Pardew and joining Salisbury in the Southern League Premier Division, where he enjoyed a good partnership with Reid.

He spent last season at Bristol Rovers, where he made just two substitute appearances, but played in another high profile FA Cup third round tie when coming on in the 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa at the Memorial Stadium.

Assistant manager Michael Meaker (calf) is expected to be passed fit to face Clevedon, but fellow striker Mitchell Page still has two games to serve of his suspension and midfielder James Harmer is unavailable until the New Year.

Yate are also at home against Cinderford Town next Tuesday (7.45pm).
