MATT GROVES got off his sick bed to help Yate become the first team to win a league match at title favourites Poole Town since last March.

The winger, who claimed to be feeling unwell on the morning of the match on twitter, lit up a dull second half by heading in an injury time winner to extend Yate’s unbeaten league run to eight games as they continued their remarkable rise up the table.

Tom Seery’s close-range header from a Groves corner handed Yate the lead on 13 minutes but second-placed Poole seized the initiative with two goals in three minutes.

Luke Burbidge equalised on 22 minutes before prolific striker Warren Byerley gave Poole the lead. A cushioned volley from Mitchell Page after he was set up by striker partner Scott Wilson levelled things up on the half-hour mark.

Poole, who had won seven of their eight league matches at home this season going into the game, were unable to score a third as Yate goalkeeper Josh Dempsey made a series of fine saves and Tom Warren cleared an effort off the line.

Yate then provided the ultimate sucker-punch with Groves looping a header into the top far corner from another Wilson cross two minutes into added time.

Yate will be looking for a fifth successive league win when they take on Cirencester Town at Lodge Road on Tuesday night (7.45pm).
