Evo-Stik Div One South & West: Yate Town 3 Cirencester Town 1
CIRENCESTER TOWN were the latest side to be swept aside by resurgent Yate, who celebrated their fifth win in a row.
Scott Wilson and Mitchell Page have only played three matches together, but have already formed a lethal partnership, grabbing a goal apiece in the first half to put Yate in command.
Matt Groves scored his fifth goal in six games five minutes into the second half, but Sam Collier grabbed a consolation goal near the end for Cirencester, who have now gone seven games without a win.
The home side went ahead on 26 minutes when Wilson swung in a lovely cross from the left and Page rose highest to glance a header into the bottom corner.
The front pair linked up well again as Yate almost doubled their lead a minute later, this time Page playing the ball through to Wilson, who burst through with great pace and showed some skill to go past Chris Thompson in the box before driving just wide.
However, Cirencester responded well and had strong appeals for a penalty when Sam Packer raced on to a dangerous through ball by Ellis Dunton and appeared to be caught by keeper Josh Dempsey as he went to ground, only for a goal kick to be given instead.
Ben Wells then delivered another warning when he cut in from the right and fired just over, but Yate ended the half in the ascendancy and went further ahead in first-half stoppage time when Wilson was sent through on goal by Page and was ice cool as he rounded keeper Dave Evans and placed the ball into the empty net.
Cirencester's low confidence was reflected by a lack of cutting edge in the final third and when they outnumbered Yate on a counter attack, Sam Collier wastefully blazed over from the edge of the box when teed up by Bennett two minutes into the second half.
The contrast could not have been greater three minutes later when Yate launched a devastating break to increase their lead. Bryant played the ball through to Page, who inadvertently found Groves to fire past a static Evans from 15 yards.
The hosts looked like adding to their tally from that point, but Evans saved efforts from Groves, Bryant and Purnell.
Michael Meaker had the best chance to score Yate's fourth in injury time when he burst through on goal and skied his shot with just Evans to beat, but Cirencester had already pulled one back by then when Collier smashed the ball into the top corner in the 85th minute after Packer’s pull-back from the byline.
