ZOE BARNETT hit a hat-trick as Thornbury crushed Wick.

The early exchanges were fairly even with both sides having chances. Visitors Wick opened the scoring against the run of play but the home side immediately responded through Zoe Barnett. V

icky Ball gave her side the lead only for Wick to equalise. Amanda Ponting, Elaine Dreyton and Becky Jones were prominent for the home side and both Shelley Beurschgens and Rachael Gardiner were to the fore in midfield.

The second half was virtually all Thornbury, who upped their game and completely overwhelmed the visitors.

The conversion of one of the two penalty strokes awarded along with goals from Becca Murray (2), Amy Kynaston (2) and others from captain Ball and Zoe Barnett (2) earned Thornbury a deserved victory.

Thornbury visit Redland seconds on Saturday, hoping to continue their goalscoring form.

Division Two: Thornbury 2nds 6 Lydney 3rds 0

THORNBURY were deserved winners over a plucky Lydney side.

The home side were well served by former captains Gill Bailey and Tracey Jones, and the duo combined well for the first goal.

Jones deftly deflected an astute Bailey pass past the keeper. Poppy Woolnough (2), Alice Stephens and two from Bailey were enough to give second placed Thornbury victory. Emma Beurschgens, Charlotte Fox, Ella Wheatley and Lily Exell were in good form for the home side whilst Annie Beurschgens distributed effectively from the back.

Bethan Brown was a virtual spectator in goal for the home side, though she dealt well with the odd shot which Lydney managed to produce.

Elaine Arnold was prominent with a number of well-directed clearances out of defence. Table toppers Old Bristolians thirds are the next opponents on Saturday for Thornbury.

  • A Sarah Lally goal was not enough to prevent Thornbury thirds from a 5-1 loss against South Gloucs. The mid-season break affected Rachael Underwood’s side, who will hope to return to winning ways against Badminton on Saturday at The Castle School, 12pm.
