SCOTT WILSON has set his sights on scoring 35 goals this season after hitting five in Yate's crushing win against Winchester on Saturday.

The 20-year-old striker is now the league's top goalscorer, having added eight goals in five games for the Bluebells to the 13 he scored at Cinderford earlier in the campaign.

"It was definitely one of the better games I've had," said Wilson, who had never hit five goals in one game at senior level before.

"It seemed like everything I touched was going in. We had a lot of chances in the first half but it was great personally getting five goals.

"I've got 21 goals now so hopefully with the wins we're getting I can be top goalscorer at the end of the season.

"The target was 30 but after Saturday I might be pushing it up to 35 if possible."

"The wingers we've got with Grovesy (Matt Groves) and Wringy (Danny Wring) are brilliant, getting forward and creating chances all the time. I can't ask for much better."

Wilson has made a huge impact since joining the club at the turn of the year and delivered a masterclass in finishing as rampant Yate destroyed a woeful Winchester side with six goals in a 30-minute period.

The outstanding Wring, who turned down a move to Premier Division side Frome Town to remain part of Yate's promotion push, scored the other goal with a spectacular strike and the visitors were flattered by a late consolation goal.

It was a seventh win in a row for Yate and their biggest of the season, which could yet prove crucial if their play-off challenge goes down to goal difference.

However, their win could have been even more emphatic if they were more clinical early on.

Mike Bryant drove wide from close range within two minutes and Groves made space for himself on the edge of the box following a weaving run, only to drag his shot too far.

Winchester served a warning of their own when Liam Robinson beat goalkeeper Lubos Ancin to reach Jack Smith's cross and headed just wide, but Page missed two gilt edged chances at the other end before ten minutes had even elapsed, hitting horribly high and wide after being put through on goal by Wring and then hitting into the side netting from Wilson's pull back.

Yate had the ball in the net when Page rose above goalkeeper Rory Anderson from Geraint Bater's floated ball into the box but the flag was raised for offside and the relief could be felt all around the ground when they finally took the lead on 29 minutes.

Page blocked Ben Wilson's attempted clearance and rolled the ball across the six-yard box, where Wilson stretched to finish into a gaping net.

Ten minutes later, Wilson turned Conor McCarthy easily and burst through to slide past Anderson.

Yate were awarded a fortuitous looking penalty six minutes into the second half when Groves was adjudged to have been brought down by McCarthy in the box after linking well with Page. Wilson confidently blasted the ball into the net from the spot to complete his hat-trick.

Wilson scored his fourth one minute later when he slotted in from six yards after Wring pulled the ball back from the right byline.

Wring deservedly got on the scoresheet himself on 55 minutes when he fired the ball past Anderson at his near post and into the top corner from the corner of the penalty area.

The fourth goal of a devastating eight minute spell arrived when Tom Seery played the ball into Wilson, who had his back to goal before quickly exchanging passes with Groves to race through and beat Anderson with a cool finish.

The game resembled a training session from then on for Yate and they allowed Winchester to get on the scoresheet with four minutes left when Joe Chamberlain played the ball through to Liam Robinson, who slid the ball under Ancin's legs.

Yate almost added a seventh immediately after but substitute Michael Meaker hit the post from Groves' low cross.

Rob Cousins' side remain ninth, but have moved to within four points of the play-offs with two games in hand on fifth-placed Tiverton and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games at Bridgwater on Tuesday.
