West Women’s Hockey League Berkeley Division One: Wotton-under-Edge 3 Redland 1

THE chilling weather took its toll at Thornbury on Saturday and resulted in more errors than either team would have liked.

Wotton were in the ascendancy for most of the first half but were unable to convert their time in the visitors’ circle into goals and there had been a few quite dangerous counter attacks. So it was with some sense of unfulfilled potential that they came off the pitch at half time.

However, things improved immediately after the break when Jasmin George converted their fourth penalty corner with a direct shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

And then the pressure lifted when a constructive attack and a subtle manoeuvre by Sharron Bates set up Heather Reid to lift the ball into the net.

The pressure returned as the visitors immediately pulled one back.

Emma Chalmers, who had been very influential in the build up of many attacks, then put the game beyond doubt in the closing minutes with a well-deserved knock-in after a goalmouth melee.

Myra Patterson and Josie Buist did much to keep the counter attacks at bay and Lottie Aldridge and Anna Patteson were creative in the attack.

  • In Berkeley Division Three, Wotton seconds drew 0-0 at North Wilts seconds.
  • Wotton men’s firsts lost 2-1 at home to Bridgend in the Davis Wood Hockey League De Cymru and Marches Division One.
  • The seconds were defeated by Lansdown thirds 4-1 in The Marches Division One.
