THE new season began last Saturday with City and Bradford playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate.

There were plenty of positives to take from the game, but also some familiar frailties.

On the positive side City started the game in excellent fashion. We took the game to Bradford playing with a good tempo and attacking intent. The home crowd were rewarded in the 13th minute when new signing Wagstaff broke through in the Bradford penalty area following a nice pass from fellow new-boy Emmanuel-Thomas. The former Charlton player finished neatly into the far corner of the net to give City a perfect start.

Then came the all too familiar from last season – a defensive howler. I was excited to see new ‘keeper Fielding play as he got rave reviews from Derby County fans. But he made a jittery debut and a rush of blood to the head in the 33rd minute gifted Wells a goal for Bradford.

In the second half City looked fatigued. I also thought we showed Bradford – a decent but not great side – far too much respect. Despite this, City took the lead once more against the run of play. This time Baldock turned provider picking out Emmanuel-Thomas in the penalty area. The former Arsenal player controlled the ball before slotting home comfortably from 12 yards.

But it was Bradford who had the final say when McArdle glanced in a late corner to make it 2-2.

Honours even was a fair reflection of proceedings and City certainly have areas where they can improve on throughout the season.

On Tuesday night City recorded their first cup victory in nearly four years with a Capital One Cup first round win at fellow League One side Gillingham. Goals from Baldock and Wynter gave us a 2-0 win and avenged last season’s defeat to the Gills at the same stage.

It was great to break our cup hoodoo and the result also gave O’Driscoll his first away victory at City.

The team will now travel to Sixfields (home of Northampton Town) on Sunday (3pm) to face Coventry City in our second league game of the season. The lads should be full of confidence against a Coventry team that have lost their first two games of the season and are being forced to play their home matches over 40 miles away from their spiritual home the Ricoh Stadium.
