CITY fans set off for Sixfields last Sunday knowing that this was going to be no ordinary away day, however no-one could’ve predicted quite what an unusual day we were in for.

I’ve been to Sixfields several times before to watch City play Northampton Town, but this time Coventry City were the ‘home side’. The Sky Blues have been unceremoniously turfed out of their Ricoh Stadium home due to a dispute over ownership and exiled 46 miles away to play at the home of The Cobblers.

Following an encouraging performance and result at Gillingham in the Capital One Cup I was confident City could take advantage of what must be a terrible situation for Coventry to be in.

City started the better side and Baldock, clear through on goal twice in the early stages, inexplicably failed to test the home ‘keeper.

We then completely lost the plot. First, Flint needlessly pushed Wilson over in the box and the referee awarded a penalty that was confidently converted by Clarke. Then just before half-time Wilson found space in the channel between Flint and Maloney and whipped the ball past Fielding. A minute later Daniels scored a header with the hapless Fontaine failing to make a challenge in the air.

O’Driscoll rang the changes at half-time. Williams and Taylor came on for Kilkenny and Wagstaff and we switched to a 3-5-2 formation. City roared back into the game, led by talisman Emmanuel-Thomas. His excellent work out on the right wing set up Baldock for City’s first and he turned goalscorer minutes later when his free-kick deflected past Murphy to make it 3-2.

With 16 minutes to go Baldock broke free and scored his second of the game to send the travelling support of 1,200 – outnumbering the Coventry home support of 1,000 – into delirium.

But the joy was short-lived when a horrendous piece of defending from Fontaine let Wilson in to make it 4-3. Incredibly City levelled again with five minutes to go, Elliott with a superb volley.

But Coventry had the last laugh when more poor defending from City led to Daniels firing the ball home from close-range to make it 5-4.

It was a truly remarkable game that could’ve easily had even more goals in it. Our defending was massively concerning though, particularly the experienced Fontaine who seems devoid of any confidence.

Wolves visit Ashton Gate this Saturday (3pm) and their forward line – including quality like Sako and Doyle – coupled with our awful record against them fills me with concern.
