THORNBURY golfer Nick Gore added the County Seniors Championship at Filton to his Scratch Cup victory in May and as a result qualified to play in the Senior’s Champion of Champions Tournament at Woodhall Spa in September.
The course was at its spectacular best with true greens and fast running fairways. The 75 competitors returned many good scores throughout the day with county captain, Richard Boulding (Henbury) setting the early pace with 76, closely followed by Richard Wood (Long Ashton) with an excellent score of 75.
This led the tournament for most of the day. Near the end, Gore returned what looked like an unbeatable 73 but then Dave Potter from Naunton Downs came in with the same score. The sudden death play-off started at the 10th hole where Gore made a solid par to Potter’s double bogey to win the Championship Salver.
Gore was also part of the Gloucestershire team which were victorious in the South West finals and will now go on to the National County Championships.
- Thornbury Seniors played for the Veterans (over-70s) Cup. For much of the afternoon it looked as if John Chick’s fine round of 66 (nett) would take the trophy ahead of Tony Gaynor and Bill Mallows with 67s.
However, Ralph Hawker, playing in the very last group, stormed in with 64 to take the honours.
