WEPL Glos/Wilts Division: Rockhampton (143-9) beat Chippenham (140) by one wicket

ROCKHAMPTON were made to fight hard for victory in a low scoring encounter against Chippenham at the Boundary Field.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Chippenham would have been very disappointed to find themselves on 13-4 in the face of some excellent new ball bowling from Will Cartlidge and Joe Maiden. Cartlidge (3-23) ripped through the top order, collecting three wickets before Maiden (1-10) picked up a well deserved wicket of his own.
Left-arm spinner James Hancox made the next breakthrough before the overseas pair of Michael Torr and Denson Narayan led a spirited counter attack from the visitors. Following the drinks break however, Chris Perry (2-22) dismissed both batsmen in quick succession to leave the Rams firmly in control. With the tale exposed, skipper Hancox (3-31) picked up two further wickets before Guy Brothwood (1-29) collected the final wicket.
The Rockhampton top order also found the going tough against the new ball and they soon found themselves 64-5 with only Rowan Cartlidge (22) having passed 20 runs.
However, the lower middle order pair of Perry (19) and Maiden refused to give up the chase and slowly chipped away at the target. As confidence grew boundaries began to flow, with Maiden (34) in particular looking fluent, before a flurry of quick wickets left the game in the balance with the final pair at the crease. However, Sam Nichols (17*) held his nerve and struck successive boundaries to hand the Rams a thrilling victory.
Rockhampton travel to Dumbleton this Saturday looking to finish their league season on a positive note ahead of their Village Knockout Final at Lord’s on September 8.
