YATE TOWN rued missed chances as they lost for the third league game in a row against Paulton, writes Sebastian Parker.
The hosts started very brightly and were awarded a penalty seconds into the game.
Lewis Haldane stepped up to take the penalty, which was saved expertly by the Paulton Rovers goalkeeper Kyle Phillips, who got down low to the right.
Yate took the lead on 15 minutes when Staley's strike was parried by Phillips, which found Haldane's feet and there was only one outcome, with the former Bristol Rovers striker scoring.
They had a chance to double their lead when captain Mike Bryant's superb ball to the back post found Staley, but his scuffed volley went agonisingly wide.
A controversial goal on 33 minutes saw Paulton Rovers draw level when a corner was whipped in by Brandon Barnes, and sloppy Yate defending left Paulton defender Marcus Mapstone with a clear strike at goal. Although it was saved by the Martin Horsell the linesman judged the ball to have crossed the line and the goal was given.
Paulton then turned the game on his head when their second goal in seven minutes saw them take the lead, a free-kick smashed into the top corner from the edge of the box by Barnes.
Yate responded brilliantly to Paulton's two quick goals when Bradley Abraham showed great vision to spot Haldane unmarked on the edge of the box, and the striker showed his Football League quality with a superb goal on 43 minutes, his seventh of the season.
Minutes into the second half Paulton Rovers were awarded a penalty when James Billing was brought down in the box.
However, Horsell saved the penalty, diving down low and clutching the ball to his chest.
A mistake by Yate defender Joe Chandler developed into the winning goal for Paulton on 70 minutes. Barnes intercepted his back pass, took it round Horsell and finished into the empty net.
Bryant had a brilliant opportunity to get Yate back onto level terms but his effort skimmed the bar after a superb back-heel from Ricky Hulbert.
Mitch Tippins made his Yate Town debut, replacing James Harmer in the 75th minute.
The last opportunity fell to substitute Jordan Rodgers, who cut inside and fired a strike heading for the bottom corner, but once again it was saved by Phillips.
Yate Town: Horsell, Harrison (Felix 65), Chandler, Seery, Cox, Harmer (Tippins 75), Bryant (c), Abraham, Staley, Haldane, Hulbert (Rodgers 80). Subs not used: Dempsey, Jackson, Lenihan, Lane, Meaker.
