Hellenic League Division One West: Clanfield 2 Tytherington Rocks 1
8:00pm Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Sport
TYTHERINGTON ROCKS’ unbeaten start to the season was ended by Clanfield.
With manager Gary Powell missing regular keeper Kevin Freeman and two outfield players, his team had to contend with a Clanfield side who played to a firm plan in not allowing the Rocks to play their normal passing game.
On five minutes Rocks had what turned out to be their best chance to score from open play when a pass from Tom Andrews on the right to Jack Smyth in the box was blocked by the Clanfield keeper at point blank range.
A free-kick conceded in the 22nd minute by Adamo Massiatto just inside the Rocks half on the left was headed in to the net by Adam Pendle to put Clanfield one up after poor defending, giving stand-in keeper Nathan Phillips no chance.
Clanfield scored their second goal when a penalty was awarded in the 35th minute after a foul by Luke Sperring and taken by Steve Olpherd, who scored low to the keeper’s right.
Rocks came back into the game on 40 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box, with Stuart Nelson stepping up to score low to the keeper’s right to make the score 2-1 to Clanfield at half-time.
The second-half was a repeat of the first.
The Rocks did not play with their usual passing game, but Clanfield were giving them no room to pass the ball and crowded them out of their stride.
Very few chances were created by the Rocks and in the second-half they did not have one direct shot on target.
Rocks keeper Phillips stopped three very good efforts, otherwise it could have been a bigger defeat.
Losing Massiatto to a second yellow card in the 70th minute did not help Rocks’ situation and despite manager Powell making three substitutions it was always going to be difficult to pull back any goals with ten players.
On Saturday the Rocks are at home to Shortwood United Reserves (3pm) and next Wednesday they are home to FC Hinksey in the Hellenic League Floodlight Cup, 7.45pm.
