ANOTHER week passes and still no league win for City, but a couple of encouraging performances to report on.

There are certainly signs that we are improving, particularly in the area of ball retention. To go to Swindon and Premier League Southampton and get 50 per cent of total possession is a good effort as the away side. We certainly weren’t seeing as much of the ball last season.

Marlon Pack was especially influential in this regard at Southampton on Tuesday night. O’Driscoll singled out the former Cheltenham Town player for special praise after the game, saying: “He keeps the ball well, moves it quickly and seldom gives it away. He hardly put a foot wrong.”

O’Driscoll also saw fit to give Pack the captaincy for this game and he seemed to thrive in the added responsibility of the role.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night young Bobby Reid put in a sterling performance that showcased his vision and passing ability. Reid seems a very real prospect if he can continue to put in such promising performances.

The final scoreline of 2-0 flattered Southampton and City can take some much needed confidence into Saturday’s game against Colchester United, after dominating large periods of the second half.

We really do need to get this monkey off our back of no league win, starting Saturday with Colchester’s visit to Ashton Gate (3pm). Colchester have made a solid start to the season winning two, drawing four and losing two of their opening eight league games.

They are, however, winless in six games and have suffered an injury crisis of late meaning they’ve had to dip into the emergency loan market. Unfortunately, we’ve had an injury blow of our own with loanee O’Connor out for several months and O’Driscoll may well sign a replacement centre back on loan before Saturday’s game.

Providing we can maintain recent performance levels I am sure City can beat Colchester and begin to climb the League One table.
