HAVING had their thirds play out a draw against a weakened Wotton the previous week, and having themselves demolished Marlborough 14-0, Swindon’s second string arrived at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in confident mood last Saturday.
There were fascinating and hard fought battles being played out all over the pitch, not least in Andy Edwards taking on the Swindon skipper in the middle of the park.
After a goalless first-half, Wotton took the lead when Ed Sonnex converted a penalty stroke, but Swindon bounced back only minutes later with a scrambled equaliser when a deflected shot inadvertently lobbed goalkeeper Chas Thomas and sneaked in under the cross bar.
The winner came when Sam Willcox used his skill to unlock the Swindon defence and, via a messy goalmouth melee, Collins kept his head to slot the ball home.

WITH goals from Darren Pearce, Ryan Howarth and Chris Price, Wotton bounced back from their defeat last week with a notable away victory over Hereford.
A solid first-half gave Wotton a platform from which to attack and it was a counter-attacking move that gave the Blues their first goal, Howarth playing provider for Pearce to open the scoring at the back post.
Tireless efforts from James Cruickshank and Dave Newns in the centre kept the pressure on, while countless string tackles from Mike Buist kept Hereford at bay.
Wotton’s second goal was a beauty, Howarth’s interception leading to a great passing move by the team and expertly finished by Chris Price.
Howarth’s penalty corner made it 3-0 and the only blot on Wotton’s otherwise spotless copybook was an uncharacteristic error by skipper Neil Curtis, who gifted the ball to Hereford for a consolation goal.
