South West One West: Thornbury 22 St Austell 22
12:00pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in Sport
THORNBURY recovered from a poor start to draw with St Austell in a fine game of rugby played in excellent spirit.
Ed Sheldon continued his try-scoring form with two more in a game either side could have won.
Thornbury failed to clear the ball and the visiting forwards drove over for a second-minute try. The conversion put the Cornishmen 7-0 ahead.
Thornbury restarted and St Austell infringed for Tim Stephens to kick a penalty.
However, the visitors looked dangerous and their full back swerved through some woeful tackling to score a second converted try.
A penalty extended the St Austell lead to 17-3.
Thornbury were back in the match with a try from the top drawer. St Austell kicked into space behind the Thornbury defence where Sheldon collected the ball and sped outside the chasing players. He raced up to the ten metre line, veered inside then accelerated outside to beat two players for pace and then outstrip the cover to score a glorious try out wide. The conversion missed.
A few minutes later Jack Hussey burst out of a tackle, charged upfield and passed to Liam Pemberton. He had a lot to do and expertly handed off two tacklers to score Thornbury’s second try. Stephens converted and at half-time St Austell led 17-15 but the momentum was with Thornbury.
The third quarter of the game was played almost exclusively in the Thornbury half but the defence held out until the St Austell pack drove over from an attacking lineout for a 22-15 lead.
A good St Austell shove disrupted a Thornbury scrum but Jack Hussey did well to pick up the ball and pass it to Wayne Underwood, who made a half-break before feeding Sheldon to race over in the corner for another try. Stephens converted superbly from the touchline to tie the scores at 22-22.
Thornbury’s tails were up and were awarded a scrum in front of the posts. With Underwood poised for the drop goal, Liam Rinn fed the scrum but he was penalised for a crooked feed. The referee blew for the end of the match shortly afterwards.
Thornbury will need to improve further to come away with a result from next Saturday’s challenge at Chard.

- Thornbury seconds played a hastily-rearranged GRFU league game with Drybrook Seconds, losing 23-22.
