Hellenic League Division One West: Tytheringtgon Rocks 1 Old Woodstock Town 0
6:00pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in Sport
TYTHERINGTON ROCKS moved to the top of the table with victory over Old Woodstock Town.
In good playing conditions Rocks did most of the early attacking, but rarely got past the penalty box, with Old Woodstock defending in numbers.
The first real threat from Rocks came when Joe Walters fired just wide of the post from the edge of the box.
Tom Andrews picked up an injury and Jack Smyth came off the bench as a straight replacement on the left of midfield.
Following several good moves, the Rocks took the lead when Sam Taylor found Justin Bishop on the edge of the box, who beat a defender to score low to the keeper’s right in the 35th minute.
Rocks were unlucky when Smyth crossed for Taylor, whose shot was well saved by the keeper, keeping the score at half-time to 1-0.
The nearest Rocks came to increasing their lead came when Toby Colbourne had a fine header cleared off the line in the 50th minute.
Old Woodstock should have equalised in 85th minute when, with only Rocks keeper Kevin Freeman to beat, their striker shot wide.
Rocks now top the table by a point with a game in hand on their closest rivals.
On Saturday Rocks are away to Letcombe Regis, 3pm.
Rocks Reserves had no game on last week but are away to Easton Cowboys this Saturday (2.30pm).
