Bristol City fans' panel: Preview to League One games against Crewe and Brentford
WITHOUT a game last weekend due to the international break, City slipped down to second bottom in the League One table as other teams in the division played games.
With Sheffield United the only team below City it could be argued that two of the division’s biggest clubs currently reside at the bottom. But budget, size of crowds and recent history count for nothing on the field and both teams have had poor starts to the season.
Sheffield United parted company with boss David Weir last week and during the next month is usually when a few more managerial casualties occur. I am sure this won’t be lost on City manager Sean O’Driscoll and he must be as desperate as the fans to get that elusive first win in the league under our belts.
We have two opportunities in the next week to get that win. City travel to Gresty Road to face Crewe on Saturday before hosting Brentford at Ashton Gate next Tuesday.
I have fond memories of my last visit to Gresty Road as it was in our promotion season of 2006/07. The game was played in mid-March and City secured a 1-0 win courtesy of a late winner from the brilliantly named Enoch Showunmi, who was somewhat of a cult hero during his time at the club.
Crewe haven’t started the season all that better than City and if we were to win then we would leapfrog the Cheshire club. They have won just twice this season – at home to Tranmere and at Preston last Saturday.
Brentford, meanwhile, started as one of the bookies pre-season favourites for promotion after missing out last season in a play-off final defeat to Gary Johnson’s Yeovil. The West London club have, however, had a mixed start to their campaign winning four, drawing three and losing four of their opening 11 games. After coming so close to our first league win at Port Vale I feel that victory is just around the corner and here’s hoping when it does arrive many more closely follow.
