NEARLY 100 badminton players from across Gloucestershire took part in the annual restricted tournament at GL1 recently.

In the under-13 girls’ singles Naomi Culpepper (KLB) won the final against Amy Oakley (All Saints) 21-12, 21-15.

Culpepper and Oakley also claimed the crown in the girls’ doubles, beating Katie Elder and Alex Neal (both of Stroud High School).

Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School took the honours in the under-15 age group as Henry Jones and Rory Farwell played a very tense three-set final against each other.

Farwell took the first game 22-20 but a fight back by Jones saw him capture the crown by winning the last two games 21-14, 21-14.

Forgetting their singles opposition, Farwell and Jones went on to win the final of the boys’ doubles pipping the second-placed pair of Francis Ryan (Newent) and Jamie Pearcy (Cleeve) in a close 21-19, 21-17 match.

Katharine Lady Berkeley’s look like a team to watch in the Sainsbury’s School Games in March 2014 with promising players such as these in its midst.

Joanna Gresty (Severnvale) won the U15 girls’ singles against Ceri Evans (Cleeve).

Neither Jones or Gresty had finished as they won the mixed doubles 21-8, 21-11 against Reece Watts and Culpepper (both U13).

The U17s played the following day and had a relatively full programme.

The boys’ singles final was contested by Jones and Andrew Chan (Cheltenham College).

Jones had beaten Chan’s brother , Tiger, in a very close semi-final 21-13, 18-21, 21-14 but Andrew restored the family honour, winning 21-11, 21-6 to stop the U15 boy from claiming two singles titles.

The under-17 girls singles was contested between Gresty and Matilda Tierney (Denmark Road).

Tierney edged out Gresty 21-13, 21-18 after a spirited but eventually unsuccessful rally by Gresty in the second game.

The U17 boys’ doubles saw Jones again appearing in the honours list with his partner Callum Farrington (Chosen Hill).

This pairing proved to be a winning one when they beat the Chan bothers in a close and tense three-setter 20-22, 21-17, 21-16.

The U17 girls doubles resulted in a final with a Severnvale girl in each pair.

Gresty and Tierney came out 21-9, 21-7 winners against Khloe Martin (Stroud High School) and Gabrielle Ponting (Severnvale).

The mixed doubles produced one of the closest matches of the day. Jones and Tierney lifted the trophy after beating Jamie Pearcy (Cleeve) and Joanna Gresty 21-20 and 21-20.

Gresty was also a runner-up in the ladies’ doubles plate with Tierney.
