MARK SAMPSON has left Bristol Academy to become the new England Women’s manager.

The 31-year-old Welshman succeeds Hope Powell, who was sacked following Euro 2013.

A statement on the Bristol Academy website said: “Mark has expressed his desire to accept the role and does so with the club’s full support.

“Naturally we are disappointed to be losing a manger who has brought so much success to the club and has been instrumental in establishing BAWFC as one of the country’s leading women's football clubs.

“In Mark's five years with Bristol he has transformed the on and off field approach guiding us to second in the league last season, two FA Women's Cup final appearances and twice qualification for the Champions League. The club is pleased we have been able to give Mark the platform to progress within the female game.

“Everyone associated with Bristol Academy Women’s Football Club would like to express their thanks for the contribution Mark has made to the club's recent history and wish him all the very best in his next role.

“The club will now begin the process of appointing Mark's successor to build on our plans for the forthcoming league campaign and help shape the next chapter of this club's exciting future.”
