Thornbury 3rds 1 Avonmouth 2nds 4

A STUNNING strike from Rachael Underwood was not enough to stop Thornbury from losing to Avonmouth in their last league game before the mid-season break.

Avonmouth, who included a couple of first team players in their side, started strongly but experienced campaigners Jean Lester, Angela Greenslade and Liz Jenkins used all their experience to frustrate the visiting attack.

The visitors however were quicker on the ball and took a two-goal lead into half-time.

Thornbury, with Lauren Upham and Amy Morse to the fore, came more into the game and reduced the arrears to a solitary goal when Underwood scored.

Helen Gardner, Miki Staton and Lorna Thornton constructed a number of good movements for the home side, whilst Ella Clark and Sarah Brearley made a number of promising runs to trouble the visitors.

However, Avonmouth added two more goals to seal their win.

Alex Arnold roamed in midfield to instigate a number of through passes to the Thornbury front runners, whilst Hannah Kemp in goal made a number of good saves to deny the visitors any further goals.

Thornbury firsts host Redland UWE seconds on Saturday in a rearranged league game at Castle School, 10.30 am.
