Berkeley Division One

Wotton-under-Edge 1 Wick 3

WOTTON suffered their first defeat of the season against Wick to surrender their position at the top of the table.

Once again it was a virtuoso opposition goalkeeping performance that kept Wotton at bay and consequently cost them the game.

For the first 15 minutes Wick could not get the ball out of their half and, despite having many attempts, Wotton could not convert the pressure into goals. Gradually the visitors became stronger and despite Wotton peppering the goal with shots there was no score at half-time.

Immediately after the break Wick outmanoeuvred the Wotton defence and tapped in the first goal.

This seemed to be a temporary setback and Wotton quickly recovered when Beccy Chalmers scored from open play after a penalty corner.

But Wick had gained confidence and when they attacked they outnumbered the Wotton defence and simply played around the defenders to score two deftly delivered goals.

Finally Wotton were galvanised and began to press, but to no avail.

Three consecutive penalty corners went unrewarded with the Wick keeper dominating the play in the circle.

Wick were undoubtedly stronger than the first encounter between the sides, and Wotton were unused to dealing with an increasingly confident and organised attack.
