Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two

Wotton Rovers 3 Winchcombe 2

WOTTON came into this game having won three of their last four games and were aiming to continue that impressive run.

The hosts welcomed back Asa Cox and Leroy Williams, who had both been recalled from their loan spells at Kingswood.

The game started brightly for Wotton and numerous attacking opportunities arose for Declan Frost and Clint Hopkins, who dominated a lacklustre Winchcombe defence.

It was Winchcombe who took the lead however after a defensive mix-up allowed the visiting attacker to roll into an empty net.

Wotton didn't let them stay in front for long and, following some neat play from wing wizard Beric Wetton, Cox and Frost, the ball was delivered to the back post for a diving Nick Bird to bury.

Wotton doubled their tally soon after when a Frost corner was placed expertly into the bottom corner past the keeper and defender on the line by Wetton.

The second half started brightly for Wotton and they could have extended their lead on more than one occasion.

Wotton introduced fresh faces in Cameron Pring and Williams.

This added energy from Pring and the controlled precision from Williams allowed Wotton to extend their lead in less than ideal circumstances when the visiting keeper gathered the ball after a 50-50 challenge and, whilst getting up, appeared to stamp on Frost.

The referee awarded a penalty but only showed the guilty party a yellow card.

Williams stepped up and dispatched the penalty expertly to put the Rovers 3-1 up.

Winchcombe did get a consolation goal but made the long trip home pointless, much to the delight of the Wotton crowd.
