West Women’s Hockey League
Berkeley Division One
Thornbury 3 Wick 1
THORNBURY started the game in determined fashion, looking to gain revenge on Wick for a heavy loss earlier in the season.
Pre-match instructions from coach John Fox had the desired effect and the team put together numerous passing exchanges with Shelley Beurschgens, Emma Beurschgens and Amanda McGarry prominent .
The introduction of Poppy Woolnough and the return of striker Vicky Ball worked wonders for the home side, who looked dangerous whenever they attacked the visitors.
A fine Charlotte Fox sortie into the visiting half carried on by the dangerous Sian Fuller resulted in Annie Beurschgens opening the scoring.
The goal proved to be just the tonic the home side needed after finding scoring difficult in recent games.
Wick came more into the game and were denied by a combination of the post and superb goalkeeping from Sophie Wilkins.
Thornbury held onto their lead until midway through the second half when Sharon Davies equalised.
Katie Bridgeman and Rachael Gardener continued to combine effectively and a Rachel Gardner cross into the circle was pounced upon by Fuller to restore Thornbury's lead.
Elaine Dreyton and Becky Jones were solid in defence for Thornbury, who increased their lead in the last minute when a Gardner cross was met by Ball, who deflected the ball high into the net, giving the keeper no chance.
Thornbury entertain Lydney seconds on Saturday at Castle School (midday) hoping to build on this performance.
Division Two
Westberries 4ths 1 Thornbury 2nds 2
GOALS from Lucy Woodruff and Holly Weir were enough to earn Alex Arnold’s Thornbury side a deserved win over Westberries to consolidate their position in the division.
The team have a friendly game on Saturday at Stroud before their next league game on March 15.
Division Three
Thornbury 3rds 2 Avonmouth 2nds 1
THORNBURY deserved to earn the points against a vociferous Avonmouth side.
The visitors took the lead in the first half against the run of play but the home side equalised shortly after the interval when Amy Morse hammered home.
An injury to Rachael Underwood did not deter the home side, who continued to press forward and were rewarded when Ella Clark scored the winner.
Angela Greenslade and Lauren Upham defended well for Thornbury and Hannah Kemp made a number of excellent saves in goal.
Thornbury entertain Wick seconds on Saturday (10.30am) at Castle School.
