West Women’s Hockey League

Berkeley Division One

Thornbury 0 Lydney 2nds 2

QUICKNESS of thought and speed on the ball was the difference between these two sides, as well as the ability to score.

Thornbury again constructed a number of well executed passing movements with Emma Beurschgens, Charlotte Fox and Sian Fuller to the fore, but on numerous occasions when a quick pass was called for, a home player hesitated or took one pace too many and the usually unmarked opponent had been closed down.

Sophie Wilkins in goal was again called into action on a number of occasions and saved Amanda McGarry's side from a heavier defeat.

Poppy Woolnough was again prominent but lacked support at vital times, though Vicky Ball was unfortunate not to find the net on a couple of occasions.

The home side were not helped when Katie Bridgeman had to retire with an injury and a blow on the leg severely hampered the roaming activities of Rachael Gardner.

Elaine Dreyton was also missing through injury, though all three hope to be available for the match at Dursley on Saturday (midday).

Thornbury require just one point from their final three games to remain in the division next season.

Division Three

Thornbury 3rds 2 Wick 2nds 4

A HIGHLY competitive game resulted in a narrow defeat for Thornbury.

Hannah Kemp made a number of good saves in goal and the experience of defenders Jean Lester and Angela Greenslade was noticeable when a number of visiting attacks came to nothing.

Lauren Upham, along with Amy Morse, were also to the fore for the home side.

Claire Johnson and Laura Haywood combined effectively in midfield, allowing Ellen Morgan and Ella Clark to provide the goal hungry Lorna Thornton and Rachael Underwood with scoring opportunities, which they both joyfully accepted.

Thornbury visit North Wilts on Saturday in their next game, whilst Thornbury seconds return to league action on Saturday at home to Pucklechurch (midday) still requiring one point to stave off relegation fears.
