JESS Hopton has been named in the development squad to represent England at the 2014 World Junior Championships to be held in Alor Setar, Malaysia, during April with a place on the GB team at the Youth Olympics in China later this year at stake.

The Winterbourne International Academy Year 12 pupil has had an exciting season, taking part in several international junior tournaments, including Yonex Belgian Juniors, Danish Junior Cup and most recently the Yonex Dutch Juniors where, despite losing in the first round to the eventual winners from Indonesia, the score was a very creditable 21-18, 21-15.

Hopton played in the Senior Welsh International, making it through the qualifying tournament into the main draw at women’s singles, and she is about to travel to Mulheim to play in the German Juniors.

Hopton began playing badminton with Yate Racketeers Junior Club and progressed to train as part of Avon juniors with Paul Tomlinson before moving on to be coached by Rebecca Pantenay in Gloucester.

Hopton currently trains at Bath University with Pete Bush and plays for Avon’s first team.
