TYTHERINGTON Rocks clinched the Division One West Championship for the second time in three seasons with a convincing win at Malmesbury.

This win means the Rocks have now gone 19 league games unbeaten with only one defeat all season with one game still to play.

Manager Gary Powell had welded a squad of players together and most of them have played together for the last three seasons to achieve this record.

After securing promotion with a 4-1 win at Carterton last Saturday, Tytherington went into the game knowing another victory would give them the title.

After a cautious opening ten minutes, Rocks started to out-play their opponents with slick passing football, which led to their first goal after 20 minutes.

The ball was fed to Luke Sperring, whose first time shot from the edge of the box flew past the keeper.

This was quickly followed two minutes later when again good approach play by Sam Taylor and Justin Bishop found Alex Chapman on the right and he made no mistake, taking the ball quickly before firing in the second from just inside the box.

Just before half-time Tom Andrews went on a run, beating three players with good control from midway inside the Malmesbury half before shooting just over the bar.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Rocks having most of the play, but it took until the 70th minute before the next goal came. Jack Smyth, who had just come off the bench, worked the ball to the byline before crossing for Bishop to run on to and score from ten yards for the third.

As in the first half, this goal was immediately followed by another when a cross from Taylor on the right found Bishop, who took the ball on the run and fired it first time, giving the keeper no chance for goal number four.

This was also the captain’s 20th league goal of the season.

Tytherington can still complete the double as on Saturday they are away to Hellenic Premier Division leaders Ardley United in the quarter-final of the Bluefin Challenge Cup, 3pm.
