THE last three matches in the Thornbury Seniors Singles Knockout for the Hunter Cup were all closely contested.

In the first semi-final, Phil Faulkner prevailed over Mike Bostic on the 17th whilst in the other Roger Unwin edged ahead of David Manser for the only time in the match on the 18th green.

In the final there was only ever one hole in it either way until a par on the 17th gave the title to Unwin by 2 and 1.

Thornbury's first three friendly matches of the summer have all been played in excellent conditions but with varying results.

Away at The Bristol, the gentlemen of Thornbury were universally unable to overcome home advantage and were soundly defeated.

However, they bounced back a week later when they were warmly welcomed on their first visit to Naunton Downs.

Many close games followed and and at the end an honourable draw was declared.

Even better was to follow when Clevedon were entertained for the first home game.

Last year's heavy defeat was avenged with a resounding victory following solid performances from all the pairings.
