GCCL Division Two

Cam (212) lost to Newent (214-8) by two runs

IT WAS a case of so close yet so far away for Cam as they lost to Newent by two runs.

After twice looking like the game had gone at 55-5 and 125-7, a patient innings from Tom Deakin saw Cam within touching distance until he was dismissed with four balls remaining.

For the second game running a wicket was taken with the first ball of the game to give Cam a bright start after a Gareth Udal throw saw opening batsman Edward Lifely run out.

Adam Jones took the game to the Cam bowling attack and scored 50 of Newent's first 65.

At the other end, Edward Rendall took the second wicket with a catch from Jake Dolbear.

Ben Holloway dismissed Jones for 83 with the score on 102.

This stemmed the run flow and Holloway claimed his second wicket with a catch from Gareth Udal.

Peter Hall had Sillence caught and bowled for 10, leaving Newent 112-5.

Alex Gray (60*) held up one end for Newent, whilst Udal took his one and only wicket with another catch from Dolbear.

Holloway came back into the attack and, after dropping a boundary catch, brother Adam Holloway took a superb diving one handed catch to remove Liam Devries.

Eventually, Holloway took the last wicket with a stumping from Dolbear, ending with 4-53.

The Cam innings stuttered to begin with as Adam Holloway and Udal were both dismissed in the opening five overs and Stuart Newman was adjudged to be out leg before off the bowling of Tom Devries.

Ben Williams was then bowled by Andrew Brookes for 11 and Mike Glover soon followed for 12 after being stumped by some very quick glove work by Jones, leaving Cam 55-5.

Hall looked in good shape and this seemed to rejuvenate the innings until he was dismissed by Gray with a quicker ball for 49.

Dolbear soon followed Hall back to the pavilion with Cam 125-7 off 31 overs.

Ben Holloway and Deakin rotated the strike confidently at the required rate.

Some neat strokes by both men left Cam needing less then 50 before Holloway was bowled by Liam Devries for 13, ending a 50-run partnership.

Deakin continued accumulating runs and passed his 50 with a six over cover.

With two consecutive big overs to follow a run-a-ball was needed off the last four overs.

George Dolling was given out leg before with Cam needing 21 to win and in the penultimate over Rendall was nearly run out.

From the first ball of the final over Deakin was able to run two to leave Cam needing three to win with five balls remaining.

Unfortunately for Cam the following ball saw him mistime his shot straight to cover and the final wicket fell, Deakin finishing with 79 from 74 balls.
