Gloucestershire Schools Under-16 Girls Cup

Rednock School 6 Chipping Sodbury School 0

REDNOCK won the county cup with a resounding win over Chipping Sodbury School in the final.

It is with outstanding credit that these girls have represented Rednock over the past five years, being their most successful football team ever, not only winning the county cup on three occasions but also reaching the last eight in the country this year.

Last year this group won the title a year early and were convincing in the way in which they retained the title this time around.

With a strong breeze at their backs, Rednock dominated possession in the early encounters.

Fine passages of play throughout were leading to wave upon wave of Rednock attack, with the Sodbury keeper in fine form. She was on hand to deny first Beth Poultney and then Rosie Herbert with fine saves.

The deadlock was finally broken by Beth Poultney, reacting first to score from close range after the keeper had made a great first save.

Half-time came with Rednock only 1-0 to the good, which certainly wasn’t a reflection on the amount of possession they had.

The second half started extremely brightly for Rednock and after some fantastic work from Herbert down the right wing, she crossed for Shannon White to glide a well-placed shot home for the pick of the Rednock goals.

Libby Herbert then got in on the act and scored from around 15 yards out to make it 3-0.

This was then time for the floodgates to open and Rednock’s pressure paid off after Rosie Herbert calmly slotted past the advancing keeper.

Keira Madden then managed to jink past two defenders to let fly with a cross-cum-shot that whistled past the keeper to make it five.

The final goal came after a fantastic solo run from Libbie Herbert, who coolly broke the offside trap and then travelled 30 yards before beating the keeper from the edge of the box with a powerful strike.
